Spring Cleaning: Get Rid of it!

"You can't reach for anything new if your hands are still full of yesterdays junk." - Louise Smith

Before you can start adding new items to your closet, you've got to clear out things that are taking up space.

Chances are, there are at least one of three things lurking in your closet that needs to go:

1. Clothes that don't fit. There are many reasons why clothes may no longer fit beyond weight gain or loss. Fabrics shrink and our bodies shift and change throughout the different stages of life. Be sure to try on shoes as well, since feet continue to grow. Styles change too, so there is no use storing something for years in the event in may fit again in the future. Let it go.

2. Things that don't make you feel fabulous. Did you buy a cute blouse on sale because the deal was too good to pass up, later re-thinking how you really feel in that piece? Or maybe you're holding on to something simply because it serves a particular purpose, like a pair of black pants; but anytime you wear them, they feel uncomfortable or simply unflattering. Whatever the case may be, get rid of it! The best way to do this is to try on everything and make a quick call. If you put in on and feel anything less than fab, toss it. Closet staples, like black pants, can be replaced with a better option. Let the old go first, and then you can make space for the new.

3. Stuff that's seen better days. Anything that's moth eaten, is stained, has rips/holes or bad pilling: toss it. These items can often be recycled through various charities and waste management in your area. The same goes for shoes, bags and accessories. If handles are frayed, metal is tarnished or buckles are broken; toss it. You deserve better.

It's best to do closet cleaning when you are in a positive mind set, as it can be an emotional undertaking for some.  If something you love no longer fits, this is not a reflection of your self worth.  Let it go and donate it so someone else can enjoy it. Remember, your clothes are meant to serve a purpose, if they are no longer doing so, getting rid of them is the best way to start a positive relationship with your wardrobe.
